Statement by the former UN Trust Territory of the British Southern Cameroons (Ambazonia)

Background

1. The pre-talks took place in Canada from October to December 2022 with the Government of Canada as facilitator. Three rounds of talks were held: in Montebello from 10 to 14 October 2022; in Mont Tremblant from 7 to 9 November 2022; and in Toronto from 15 to 17 December 2022.


2. Various groups representing the Former UN Trust Territory of the British Southern Cameroons were invited by Canada to take part in the pre-talks including AGovC, APLM, IG led by Julius Ayuk Tabe, the IG led by Marianta Njomia, the IG led by Chris Anu, the IG led by Sako Ikome and the Ambazonia Coalition Team (ACT). The following groups accepted and took part: AGovC, APLM, IG led by Julius Ayuk Tabe, the IG led by Marianta Njomia and the Ambazonia Coalition Team (ACT). Each group nominated two members as delegates to represent them during each meeting.


3. Prior to each meeting, preparatory sessions were held between the leaders to build a singular Ambazonia position, foster cohesion and consensus as well as strategize. During these preparatory sessions, external and in-house experts were invited to provide material and technical support. The leaders of the participating groups collectively appointed Prof. Carlson Anyangwe as the delegation lead.


4. At the end of the third round of talks, a ‘Joint Declaration of Intent and Commitment’ was signed by both parties.

ON THE ONGOING WAR IN THE FORMER UNITED NATIONS TRUST TERRITORY OF THE BRITISH SOUTHERN CAMEROONS (AMBAZONIA)

Following several months of pre-talks, the Government of the Republic of Cameroon and The People of the Former UN Trust Territory of the British Southern Cameroons (Ambazonia) have made a historic commitment to engage in a negotiated process to end the ongoing war. We believe that this is an important step towards peace and stability in the Gulf of Guinea, and we have expressed our commitment to working together in good faith to find a lasting and mutually-beneficial resolution to the war.


In the presence of the Government of Canada and international observers, both parties jointly signed a commitment to start a genuine process that addresses the root causes of this war. Our goal is to establish a sustainable and secure environment for our peoples and to promote economic and social development in the Gulf of Guinea.

The War

For the past six years, The Republic of Cameroon and the People of the Former UN Trust Territory of the British Southern Cameroons (Ambazonia) have been locked in a war that has resulted in thousands of casualties and a humanitarian crisis affecting over two million lives.

Agreement

The governments of the Republic of Cameroon and The People of the Former UN Trust Territory of the British Southern Cameroons (Ambazonia) have agreed to commence talks in order to initiate a genuine, internationally-backed process that seeks to address the fundamental causes of the ongoing war.

Stakeholders

The talks will be held under the auspices of the government of Canada and will be open to the participation of key regional and international stakeholders.

Expectation

The aim of the talks is to foster trust, find common ground and pinpoint potential discrepancies, and create a credible and workable framework for more substantial and sincere negotiations, consistent with internationally recognized standards.
